Will ‘The Thrill’ Failla – $500,000 GTD Summer Poker Open Championship Champion
Will ‘The Thrill’ Failla entered this Summer Poker Open Championship final table as the most experienced player remaining in the field and he left it as the winningest Borgata Poker champion ever, claiming his seventh BPO title and a more than $280,000 score.
Let’s just revisit that first statistic for a second, his seventh BPO title. Add that to multiple other regional titles, a WPT Champions Cup win in 2011, a Heartland Poker Tour title from 2012 and a PokerStars Caribbean Adventure title and you start to think that Failla might be running out of room in his trophy case.
While that case is likely getting pretty full, we imagine that this title means a lot to ‘The Thrill’, especially when you add in the fact that this was one of the toughest non-WPT Borgata Championship fields in recent memory, making this title one of the more sought after trophies that the Borgata has awarded in the last few Opens.
In the end, the creme rose to the top, as Failla time and time again ground down his opponents, working a short stack for the majority of yesterday’s Day 3 before using a late push to seize a top stack coming into this final Day 4 session.
Mike Dentale joked on twitter earlier today that Failla was going to “fold and check-call his way to the title” and while that might not be the sexiest or most action packed way to take down a tournament, it clearly worked. While other players dropped around him, time and time again Failla was picking up smaller pots, using his experience to first make some valuable pay jumps and eventually take home another Borgata Poker title.
Will ‘The Thrill’ Failla was already one of the most respected tournament players on the East Coast. That claim is backed up by years and years of results but now, at the Borgata at least, he’s the winningest player ever in terms of major tournament titles. With that record likely not falling any time soon, as Failla, who also satellites into this event through a live qualifier, will likely only continue to churn out results and wins over the next few years.
